Barium Carbonate increases both the force and the duration of muscle contractions and induces violent vomiting and purging. Effects on the central nervous system are to cause both clonic and tonic muscle spasms which pass on to paralysis. The action on the heart is at first to cause acceleration of the heart beat, but irregularity of cardiac action ensues and the heart stops in systole. Degenerative changes are produced in the walls of the arteries leading to softening and distention and resulting in aneurysms, ruptures and apoplexy (many cases of aneurysm have been cured with Bar-c, mostly in lower potencies). Lymph nodes and glands, especially the tonsils, are involved, resulting in hypertrophy and ulceration.

Roger notes
I know you have heard of Baryta Carb before, but let me go through just a few points about it that you may not be familiar with. Baryta Carb you will usually use in children and old people, and not so much in between. Although, you will use it in between also, but it goes to the second childhood state. People that go into senile dementias and pre-senile dementia you will use Baryta Carb. It will be one of your main remedies.
Especially if they go into senile states and they become childish definitely think of Baryta Carb. Playing with dolls and wanting to do other childish things, think of Baryta Carb.
Now dwarfishness is the term that Kent uses, but the term that George uses is immaturity, and it is not that they always stay child, it means they are always immature for whatever stage of life they are in. It means that at 12 they act like they are 7 or 8. At 20, they act like they are 13. At 30, they act like they are 18 or 19, so they are always behind where they should be in their development. The immaturity can also be single parts of the body, especially the genitalia and testes, very small testes, testes that don’t develop is a keynote for Baryta Carb. They are weak mentally and they sort of intuit that they are functioning at the proper level, so it makes them feel very inferior. They have a lack of self-confidence. It is one of the main remedies. So, they get very shy, they feel threatened. The baby that wants to peek out from behind Mama, all that in the early stages you will see that in Baryta Carb.
The interesting thing is that their minds don’t focus well, even in an early age. You know the kids - where do we see them focusing? Mostly in play. Now, in kids they don’t play well. They don’t play right. That means that here is the toy and they pick it up and sort of look at it superficially and then they toss it away. They may just sit and stare into space. Little kids and you know little kids don’t do that. So, if the mother says, "It doesn’t seem to be interested in the toys", think of Baryta Carb. It just plays superficially with it. Because of this inefficiency, there may be a type of jealousy that comes up, but it is not overt. They don’t act jealous of the other kids in the family, but the jealousy comes out in the following way. They start somatizing it, and so they may start developing enuresis whereas before they were trained, now they go back where they need diapers again when they shouldn’t. Or especially nervous biting of the fingernails in small kids. It is not the biting that Medorrhinum does which is an aggressive thing. There are a lot of remedies that bite the nails for different reasons, but this is a real nervousness. Of course, they don’t do well in school. They study for a long time. They are very passive. They sit. They will do everything they are supposed to, then they go to the test and they flunk anyway. Even though they could recite it word for word the night before. They don’t play with other kids as they get older. They want to stay at home alone in the family. They feel secure in the house, but finally they do get involved in a relationship with someone. As they get much attached to that person, they will do anything that the person says. You will confuse them with Staphysagria, because they have very low confidence. They can be masturbators, and they are very, very easily suppressed because dependent on their mate, so they do anything that they say. That doing anything that people say is a typical Baryta Carb thing. If you tell the patient, "Go change your diet this way", then they go and do exactly what you say. Or, you say, "Maybe you should go out and find some hobbies, take up scuba diving or something." You say it as a joke. They come back the next time, "Well, I’m scuba diving like you told me to." It’s that kind of thing. They take you very literally. They tend to be sort of moralistic but in a very small minded sort of way moralistic.
You know, they may have an affair, but the main thing that concerns them is not getting caught, or "What would the neighbors think?" That kind of moralistic idea. Sex, as I say, they can very easily turn off the sex drive, as if there are too little hormones in the system. So, if they end up in a relationship fine, and if they don’t end up in a relationship, they can masturbate and be just happy with just once a week or something like that. It’s like there is not a big push to go further. There can be sort of a dwindling tendency where the patient was fairly well at a certain point doing well, and then they start to dwindle down. They lost their interest. They stop going out. They start getting sort of you can see the whole system get smaller. That is another aspect that George hasn’t mentioned I don’t think before of Sepia also. If you see a patient that is fairly robust and all of a sudden their whole life starts to dwindle down, you know like the witch in Dorothy, "I’m melting." You know, if it starts that you get that feel about that person, you can think of Sepia or Baryta Garb.
Because of this small mindedness, they can develop a preoccupation with their health, but especially their appearance. They are the kind of person that comes in and wants their eyebrows perfectly done. The same thing applies to their body, so they get tremendous preoccupations about the size of their testicles, about their appearance, about some little mole of something that they have or something. Preoccupation. They want everything to be perfect. Of course, we mentioned about the irresolution, the indecisiveness. They can’t ever make a decision, like Graphites. They walk in and then they can’t walk out with the thing they went in for. There are a few physical things you should remember. Swollen glands. Chronically swollen tonsils. You can think of Baryta Mur and Baryta Carb, even if the kid isn’t so bad, but it gives them sort of a stupid look, because they get these big tonsils and they can’t really, the adenoids are swollen and they can’t breathe through the nose, so they are sort of with the mouth open. That can be Baryta Carb. Frequent colds as we said. Here is a keynote symptom. The hemorrhoids protrude during urination, even during urination. And an aversion to fruit.
