China is prepared from the tincture of dried Peruvian bark. Quinine is one of the main alkaloids of Cinchona. In small doses it stimulates, and in large doses it depresses the activity of the cerebro-spinal system. The following symptoms are produced by Quinine overdose: buzzing in the ears, diminished hearing, headache and vertigo, dimness of sight, weakened action of the heart, intoxication similar to the one caused by alcohol, followed by delirium, stupor with difficult respiration and convulsions. Weakness, especially from any drain on the system, is the general sphere of action China.

ESSENCE China belongs to the malarial miasm. The core feeling is of being tormented or persecuted. It is characterized by hypersensitivity, as if its been skinned (= bark); the nerves are raw, too close to the surface. A word or an action, which wouldnt affect someone else, is a torture for them. To deal with harsh reality, they escape into a fantasy world. They tend to daydream. They may spend a large portion of the night not being able to fall asleep "building castles in the air", imagining how they will break away and have a wonderful life. They are planning to change their life, but being too weak, rarely get into action to materialize these plans. The intensity of inner life can lead to exhaustion ( = loss of mental fluids), with the result that they become irritable and even violent, insulting and abusive. MENTAL SYMPTOMS - Irritable sensitive "touchy" ... idealistic sarcastic - Delusion of being UNFORTUNATE; the world is HOSTILE (= being constantly harassed by enemies) - Building "air castles", esp. at night daydreaming - Oversensitive to stimuli, esp. noise - Gloomy, morose depressed mood swings. - Fear of animals, esp. dogs - Aversion to superficial contacts (< slight touch), only want deep contacts and friendships (> hard pressure) APPEARANCE The face is jaundiced, pale and Hippocratic, the eyes are sunken and surrounded by blue margins. Great dislike to all mental and physical exertions. Indifference, apathy and taciturnity; low spirited and gloomy ... emaciated upper part of the body with distended abdomen (in severe pathology) GENERAL SYMPTOMS - DEBILITY WEAKNESS collapse anemia (esp. after loss of vital fluids) FEABLE EMACIATED - Inflammations with bleeding (e.g., sore throat) - CHILLY worse COLD in general - PERIODICAL (esp. every other day or every 7 days) or intermittent complaints - Hypersensitivity: intense photophobia intolerance of noise acuteness of smell - General aggravation from SLIGHT TOUCH and amelioration from HARD PRESSURE pain > by movement, and esp. touching pain renewed (when not present) by merely touching the part PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS Head: HA with gallbladder or liver disorders sick HA throbbing HA, > hard pressure tinnitus with HA (= weakness) pale, YELLOW-GREEN or yellow complexion (= liver) cold sweat on face, esp. around the mouth Circulation: huge remedy for anemia and diseases of the blood in general (leukemia, lymphoma, etc.) GI: TYMPANITIS: bloated, distended, flatulent, but with no relief from eructation or expelling gas everything tastes bitter gallbladder and/or liver disease (hepatitis, gallstones (6C for a month or so is said to eradicate), etc.) gallbladder colic frequent rumbling, eructation, and flatus tongue coated yellow DIARRHEA cramping, > bending double swelling of liver and spleen (in mono, hepatitis, etc.) anorexia < fruit crave sweat, salt, spicy Respiratory: asthma in the fall cough > laughing Female: severe dysmenorrhea amenorrhea bloody leukorrhea Sleep: night sweating insomnia from excited thoughts and heroic fantasies sleep disturbed by slight noises Flu: Flue comes slowly and goes away slowly ... jaundice yellow tongue bloating muscle aches GI symptoms and swollen glands (if you get this combination, it's almost 100% China) can't stand a touch, but are OK with pressure China flu usually comes at the end of the winter. |
ETIOLOGIES LOSS OF BODY FLUIDS (dehydration, hemorrhage, diarrhea, nursing, post-partum, etc.) BLOOD TRANSFUSION spleen removal
AFFINITIES BLOOD nerves GI TRACT liver spleen MODALITIES SRP: < from slight touch, but > from hard pressure <: LOSS OF FLUIDS TOUCH jar noise ... COLD drafts autumn FOGGY or cold, damp weather NIGHT open air mental exertion eating coition >: HARD PRESSURE lying down fasting SENSATIONS COLDNESS numbness of single parts PAINS TEARING cramping pressive stitching NOTES - Physical problems may be perceived as torture, words like "it is torturing me" or "it stops me from doing " are common. - It's difficult to make contact with China patients because they don't like superficial contacts and can be abusive, impolite and inconsequential in answering questions. They will only open up when they feel real interest and sympathy (Ghegas.) - China is partially similar to Nux-v., Lyc., Chel., and Nat-m. With only temporary or partial improvement after these remedies, think of China. - Per Eric, China is often indicated for someone who contracted some "weird" bug, e.g. when traveling to Mexico. - Think of China salts when it looks like some other Rx and the patient has tinnitus. PRIME INDICATIONS 1. Ailments after loss of fluids; = exhaustion, weakness, headaches, GI disturbances, anemia. 2. Tympanitis; eructations or expelling gas do not ameliorate. 3. < slight touch, > hard pressure. 4. Clarity of mind and abundant ideas and plans in the evening and at night. 5. Oversensitivity of the senses. DIFFERENTIALS Staph: China has the sensation of being offended and hurt, and at this point it resembles Staph. But while Staph feels insulted and angry, China feels hindered in his ambition and starts fantasizing (Sankaran.) Nat-mur: China thinks about all kinds of positive and wonderful things, like being able to fly, relaxing on a warm day at the seaside, being the richest person of the world, etc., after which they feel happy and satisfied. Nat-mur dwells on past disagreeable occurrences, i.e. thinks about all kinds of negative things. COMPLEMENTARY Ferr Phos-ac. Roger notes
Speaking of touchy, lets talk about China. The China personality you can get confused between Natrum Mur and Nux Vomica, sometimes a little bit towards Lycopodium more because of physical symptoms. They are very touchy, but in this exact way in terms of nervous erythrism. Really sensitive to different things: to insults, to noises, sensitive to external impressions, but not refined necessarily. They tend to be fairly intense. Rather introverted and definitely easily hurt. Not very communicative. That is just the general type of person you will find. There are certain characteristic keynote symptoms for their psychological state that help. One is the Walter Mitty. You know, the one who has these big dreams and the night comes and it is like, get in the car, and next he is doing all of these. Well, this happens at night with China. At night, I think in the books it says, "building castles in the air at night," and then the next day he wakes up and thinks, "How foolish" and so forth. Now, there is a fear of animals. Dogs and other animals. Like Stramonium it probably has the very strongest fear of animals. Delusions that there are animals. You know, young children who have delusions that there are animals out in the halls and that sort of thing. That is Stramonium. Causticum has especially fear of dogs. Tuberculinum, which can have fear of cats, even fear of cats or just disgust with cats. Or with furry things in general, even furs, peoples fur coats they have disgust with, Tuberculinum. Also, Belladonna has the marked fear of dogs sometimes.
They either have to do with the gallbladder or with the intestines. Lots of bloating. Gallstones. It is one of our big gallstone remedies. Gallbladder attack remedies. Not stones so much actually as sand and grit or very small stones, not the big huge stones that would go more for Calcarea or Chelidonium.
With all of this, they usually have a lot of gas, distension, huge distension of the stomach with the characteristic that it is not ameliorated by the eructations or flatus. Now it is one of the most important remedies for periodicity. Like, what are some of the other remedies? Natrum Mur. Arsenicum. Sepia. What is the cycle for Sepia? 14 or 28 days more characteristically. Sulphur can. Nux. I havent seen it so much in Nux, but I know it is supposed to. Of course China is one of the main remedies for malaria. So periodicity. China especially for every other day problems.
Now, it has some other keynote symptoms. It is a remedy for neuralgias and pains, headaches and so forth. Especially pains that are better from hard pressure, but worse from touch. George makes an analogy here with their personality. He says that there personality is - you can comnunicate with them if you give them lots of attention. Sort of like Mercury. But if you just talk to them superficially, they wont make good contact with you.
They have a characteristic aggravation in foggy weather, so you can find that here in the Bay area. They might come in and say that.
There is a characteristic bitter taste in the mouth. The stomach conditions are usually aggravated from fish and from fruit, causing diarrhea. Arsenicum is another one of the main remedies that get diarrhea from fruit. If you hear diarrhea from fish and from eggs, instead of regular China Officianalis, think of China Arsenicosum, especially diarrhea from eggs. Thats a keynote.
Bloody leucorrhea. Its a main remedy for that.
Just like the stomach swells, the extremities can swell in edemas anasarcas where the skin is very pale with a lot of pitting edema with a lot of pallor in the part, whiteness. One other keynote, like Lycopodium is one hot foot and one cold foot, China has it in the hands one hot hand and one cold hand.
And of course, the most classic thing, if you hear it, its great, is that the complaint came on after loss of fluids of some sort. You wont see that too often. Either the person had a prolonged diarrhea or they had a prolonged uterine bleeding, something like that, and then comes the complaint after that, the neuralgias, the headaches, whatever it was. It is a good story for China. If it is a headache that is much better from hard pressure, you think of it, along with Mag-phos. Some other remedies which have that also.
