ESSENCE Need for connection, not with people in general, but with a certain person or group; may put all the energy into that one relationship and get really obsessed with it trying to "fix" it. Often get into relationships, which cannot be "fixed" (a friend who is an alcoholic or who is terminally ill). Get so invested into a relationship, that eventually collapse and go into an apathetic state when they just don’t care (it’s a collapse more on the emotional level than on physical). Have a lot of Phos’s features (extroversion, lack of boundaries to some extent, same kind of fears), but with some "flatness" about them. MENTAL SYMPTOMS - APATHETIC, BURNED-OUT state … indifferent to all external events - wants to lie and watch TV. - Ailments from GRIEF, DISAPPOINTED LOVE - Slow to answer … slow grasp … can't collect his ideas; hunts for words … poor memory - Irritable, doesn’t want to be bothered GENERAL SYMPTOMS - Collapse after grief, illness, drugs, fluid loss ... WEAKNESS, starting on the emotional level and proceeding to the physical level … INDIFFERENCE to everything - Too RAPID GROWTH in children leading to fatigue and/or physical symptoms (TB look: tall, thin, pale) - CHILLY and < becoming cold - DEHYDRATION (from diarrhea, sweating, urination, etc.) … minerals "leached" out of the body PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS Head: HAIR LOSS (after the Rx can aggravate first) … hair loss, even from the eyebrows and chest, or other areas … headache from mental exertion Chest: weak feeling in chest from talking Stomach: loss of APPETITE from GRIEF … lassitude after eating … craving for FRUIT, JUICY and REFRESHING things, sodas, carbonated drinks Abdomen: painless, non-debilitating diarrhea … copious diarrhea in very active children (SRP) Urinary: polyuria with dry mouth and throat (è possible remedy for diabetes) Sleep: Profuse PERSPIRATION at night and towards morning … POLYURIA at night COMPLEMENTARY China – before or after in excessive sweating, diarrhea and debility; Nux-v – after, in fainting after a meal; Rhus-tox – after, in typhoid. PRIME INDICATIONS 1. Apathy; burned out; listless. From grief, disappointed love, after exhausting or acute diseases. Indifference. 2. Chilly. 3. Craving for fruits, refreshing and juicy things. 4. Free secretions (perspiration, emissions, diarrhea, urine). 5. Crushing weight on vertex; vertigo.

ETIOLOGIES LOSS OF FLUIDS … EXERTION … EMOTIONS (grief; mental shock; unhappy love; homesickness; bad news) … sexual excesses ... over-study AFFINITIES MIND … nerves ... sexual system … bones MODALITIES <: cold … coition >: warmth … SLEEP … short sleep SENSATIONS Of a CRUSHING WEIGHT on VERTEX … of pressure in eyes, navel, breasts etc. … formication, at root of hair, along the spine, limbs ... bruised soreness … as if intoxicated PAINS As if beaten, in back and limbs … as if bones were scraped (esp. in growing pains) DISCHARGES Profuse (urine, diarrhea, sweat) NOTES - If there are not too many symptoms to go with, but there is an extreme fatigue, think of acids. - The Phos-ac state can be reached through other stresses beside grief, such as debilitating illness like mononucleosis, or chronic diarrhea. Drug abuse and alcoholism may lead to a similar picture. - Phos-ac relieves cancer pains. DIFFERNTIALS - Phos-ac is particularly indicated after Ign. for the chronic effects of disappointed love. Ign. suits the acute symptoms and Phosphoric acid the chronic. Ign. is a remedy of the sensitive, the easily excited: with incredibly rapid changes of mood; very unlike the apathy and indifference of Phos-ac. - China’s diarrhea is debilitating, Phos-ac’s not. - Phos-ac often follows Rhus-tox after the latter has relieved the restlessness but not the diarrhea, and the patient goes into this quiet sort of stupor. - Stupor "sequence": Phos-ac à Arnica à Op. The keynote of the Ph-ac stupor is that the patient is easily aroused and then is fully conscious. Arn. patient can be aroused but falls asleep while answering questions. Op. cannot be aroused. - Kent contrasts Phos. ac. and Muriatic ac. In Phos-ac. the mental symptoms are the first to develop: the remedy runs from the mental to the physical, from the brain to the muscles: the muscles may remain strong after the mind has given out. In Mur-ac. the muscular prostration comes first, and the mind seems clear until long after the muscles are prostrated. Vithoulkas describes the mental exhaustion of Pic-ac, the emotional exhaustion of Phos-ac, and the physical exhaustion of Mur-ac. Roger notes
It seems to come from two causations that we see. One is from grief and the other is from drugs. Drug abuse.
I mean narcotics. When what happens after the drug use of after the grief is that they go into this apathetic state. Now, the apathetic dead state. It doesn’t have to be so severe. I remember I was always waiting for them to come in with this stony dead, no life at all. Just remember if things go in the direction, you know, if it’s drifting that way, you can let the remedies come to your mind. If somebody says "I feel more apathetic now," but they are still going to their lob, they are still with their family, they are still functioning normally, you can still think of Phosphoric Acid. If what they are complaining about is the way their pathology or the limitation is pushing them is that direction. So, if you hear of somebody that has mental weakness sort of a little bit more indifference than usual, or they are tired, very fatigued after a major grief, think of Phos. Acid. Even without deadness or total apathy. Sometimes even before you will just get a little fatigue and you will hear a characteristic keynote like the hair falling or sometimes they will emaciate. There are some other keynotes of the remedy. Of course, everybody knows that there is a craving for fruit and juicy things and refreshing things. Not the gum. There is a pressure on the head as if there is a weight on the head. Diarrheas that are painless and odorless and sometimes involuntary. But this characteristic especially that even with a lot of diarrhea they are not depleted by it, the way you might expect them to be. So, the depletion is less than what you would expect from the amount of diarrhea. You could confuse this with Selenium also. Because the hair turns grey or falls out. Selenium the hair on the whole body falls out, the eyebrows, the head, the rest of the body and they also have seminal emissions, both Phos. Acid and Selenium have seminal emissions without an erection from muscular activity or what ever.
