Thuja (Arbor Vitae) is a North American tree growing from Pennsylvania northward. It prefers dark, murky places, esp. swamps, and grows very fast. It is bushy, pretty looking from the outside, but with "ugly", intervening branches under the foliage.
TOXICITY: Native Americans extensively used infusions and salves, prepared from the twigs and inner bark, for various complaints, e.g. fever, gout, toothache, muscular pains, cough, skin diseases, arthritis, and rheumatism. Taken in large doses, the oil may produce hypotension, convulsions and severe flatulence and distension of the stomach. Cases of fatalities have been recorded from use of the oil as abortifacient.

The only chance to be accepted is to hide their inner ugliness, they don’t want to be found out, so they present to the world not what they really are. MENTAL SYMPTOMS: - Feel secretly worthless and are afraid that the others find out and despise them … much concerned with the self-image and fears not being liked by others … their survival depends on a complete cover up, and there is a tremendous anxiety of being exposed … in the emotional sphere, this feeling of fragility is manifest in the fear of losing face in society. - Low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. - Feel unattractive, even ugly … spend much time perfecting the appearance … desperate to fit in … loneliness and sadness from sense of being separate. - Moralistic … religious, drawn to strict religious orders, but often with skeletons in the closet. - Secretive, even lying about life circumstances. - When talking the last words of the sentence are mumbled. - Superstitious and drawn to supernatural to the extreme … often join cults and become cult leaders Dreams: of dying … of falling from a height and/or shattering. Roger notes
Thuja
I think we all basically have heard a lot about Thuja. I am not going to go through the essence. It can come sometimes from small pox vaccinations. Also you can think of Silica, Sulphur, or Malandrinum. It can also come from gonorrhea, either in the patient himself or from the parents, and from suppression of warts. The head, usually the skin is greasy. The hair can be greasy or it can be dry and stick up.
Left-sided headaches. It is one of the main remedies in left-sided headaches. Especially if you hear left-sided headache in a male, you are being set up for Thuja. Tumors or warts on the face, one the eyelids, especially or on the nose like Causticum or Nitric Acid. There is a keynote of the nose running during stool. You won’t see that terribly often, but it is a remedy that a lot of times we come to from keynotes because it is hard to find the personality.
Craving for onions. Even though they are aggravated or sometimes have an aversion to onions. Also Allium Cepa craves onions.
There is a sensation of something living in the belly which often they won’t tell you. They may say, "I feel something moving" or they will say, "I feel like I’m pregnant", or sometimes they say they feel like there is an animal inside.
Of course, condylomata, uterine polyps. You know forked urine is a keynote. A lot of people have forked urination once a month or once a week. If they have it every time they urinate, I would like to try and end up with one of those remedies. Especially if they didn’t have some other real strong indication for other remedies. If that was the most unusual thing about the case and it was strong, yeah. I’m talking like a Thuja, you know, hedging my bets. If that was the only symptom in the case and they had it every time they go and it was.
Problems with the nails; either corrugated or pitted, or thickened on the toes. Well, it could any change in the nail you could think of Thuja. Silica is the main remedy for ingrown toenails. It is one of the best confirmations for Silica. Thuja and Silica.
Sleep on the left side. Can wake 3-4 A.M.
Perspiration sweetish.
Remember the characteristic voice where they start to mumble. They start their sentences and then they trail off. When I get a case history and somebody tells me a case history, and the history comes out all confused I say, "Why is this so confused?" A lot of times they say well they just couldn’t explain it right. They couldn’t tell me. I had to talk to them for two hours to get the story out. Thuja. If you hear that or if you realize that that ok, you were in Los Angeles and you were with so and so and then you went here? Well, no I didn’t exactly go there then. You keep double backing and backtracking and you can’t get the picture of what in the world happened and then finally it becomes clear and it is Thuja. That case. Does that ring any bells?
Then the fixed ideas about the body. Not just that they are pregnant or that they have something living inside, but that the idea of fragile. They won’t say any more nowadays that something is made of glass. They will just say that they feel fragile. It sounds better. Like all the psychotic remedies, they are worse from humidity. It is a very tricky remedy.
Thuja people are very nice people. No mental problems at all sometimes. You usually won’t say that you could hate a Thuja person, but you could find it very hard to warm up to them. You could be exasperated by them. You could feel that they were suspicious and cold and sneaky, but you wouldn’t just hate them. They can be quite pleasant. They tend to be closed but they are closed in a way that sometimes you won’t even realize it. Perfectly open/closed. Main point is that they are outsmarting you. I love this cartoon. There is this guy sitting here like this with a sign in front of a Dr. and it says "I have six things wrong with me, can you find them?" They will do that. They will test you in the office. They will say things and they won’t give you the whole story and then when you don’t tell them the right diagnosis, which they already know, they will bring it up and say, "Well, don’t you think it could it be this?" and then you realize you have been set up. They will ask about your credentials sometimes. Ignatia also will do that. It is interesting that those two remedies have the same sensation of a nail in their headaches. Seems to be a correlation there. It is rare that Thuja will be a superficially acting remedy. It won’t be just a short one-month remedy. When it works, it will work deeply.
